GPS Markers – DIP and HARP

1 min read

GPS markers can be saved on the Stratos to aide in navigation under canopy and jumpmaster spotting. The Stratos supports 2 markers, DIP and HARP. These coordinates can be entered as lat/lon (decimal degrees) or MGRS.

While in the aircraft, the Stratos will display the distance to the HARP if it is saved, and will fallback to distance to the DIP if no HARP is set. Under canopy with the GPS aided nav screen, the Stratos relies on on the DIP marker coordinates to calculate distance and glide to the DIP, as well as directional assistance to the DIP.

To set the HARP and DIP coordinates go to the main GPS screen. Press the center button to enter the GPS menu, and use these options:

  • Mark DIP Here
  • DIP Coordinates
  • HARP Coordinates

Mark DIP Here #

This options provides a straightforward way to mark your current location. While this screen is open the GPS module will be on and searching for satellites to give you the most accurate GPS position possible.

Tips:

  • To assist the GPS signal, stand in a clear area with no overhead obstructions within a 20 foot radius.
  • It may take up to 5 minutes for the GPS to acquire your location for the first time.
  • Stand at your desired landing point when marking the DIP to have the most accurate distance reporting from the DIP while on jumprun.

Once the GPS has a good signal it will show you current location latitude and longitude using the decimal degrees format, as well as your MSL (mean sea level) altitude. You can select “save” to store this location as your DIP for future jumps, or “cancel” to exit this screen without updating your DIP.

DIP Coordinates #

Select this menu option to manually enter the DIP coordinates. Select between lat/lon (decimal degrees) or MGRS coordinates.

You can also use this GPS coordinate converter if you only have a street address or lat/lon in a different format than decimal degrees.

The DIP marker is used when displaying GPS aided navigation information while in freefall and under canopy. See the altitude display configuration section for details.

HARP Coordinates #

Select this menu option to manually enter the DIP coordinates. Select between lat/lon (decimal degrees) or MGRS coordinates.

The HARP marker is used to display the distance to the HARP while in the aircraft. If the HARP marker is not configured, the Stratos will default to showing the distance to the DIP while in the aircraft.
