Display Light / Night Jumps

1 min read

Insight and Stratos GPS altimeters include a display light for night jumps (or those sunset jumps that get a little darker than you’d like). The lighting system is tuned to be readable without negatively affecting your night vision.

By default the display light is controlled automatically by the altimeter using a light sensor to detect ambient light conditions. The light will automatically turn on:

  • When a button is pressed and the ambient light is dim, the light will turn on for 15 seconds.
  • When a skydive is detected and the ambient light is dim or dark, the light will turn on and remain on until the skydive is completed.

The automatic lighting is very helpful for times when you didn’t expect it to be dark (for instance in the back of a closed up Skyvan or C-130). However for intentional night jumps it is recommended to manually turn on the display light.

From the clock screen press the center button to open the menu. Select the Light: auto | on option. Press the center button to toggle the light between auto (default setting) and on.

When the light is set to on, the display light will remain on until a skydive is completed. For example if you set the light to on during your gear check prior to the skydive, the light will remain on for the entire airplane ride, freefall, and canopy descent. Upon landing the altimeter will set the light back to auto to save battery.
